Everything you wanted to know, but were afraid to ask (aka FAQs)
Welcome to the Mercury Theatre Wynnum Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page! Whether you're a first-time visitor, a seasoned theatre-goer, or someone looking to join our vibrant ensemble of performers and volunteers, this page is your go-to resource for all the essential information you need.
How much are tickets?
Tickets are generally around $25.00 per person. Please check the current production ticket prices as there may be fluctuations. Mercury Theatre Wynnum is a volunteer run, not-for-profit community organisation and all proceeds to back into the theatre company.
How do I prepare for my audition?
Most Mercury Theatre auditions are 'cold reads' - where an actor is asked to read from a script with little to no prior preparation. This allows the Director to evaluate your instinctive acting skills, how you work with others and if you fit a particular role. To prepare, practice cold reading by looking at various scripts or books and reading them aloud without preparation. Focus on clarity, pacing, and expressive reading. It might also help to familiarise yourself with the play, the genre, and any available synopsis or script excerpt. Break a leg! Please read the Audition Pack for the play you are auditioning for.
Do I need any previous experience to audition?
Absolutely not! We welcome all levels of experience - all we want is passion and commitment.
What plays will you show next year?
We will announce next year's season towards the end of each year. If you would like to submit a play for consideration, please visit this page!
Do I need to be able to fly to audition for Peter Pan?
Only in your dreams. Just bring some pixie dust for good luck.
What happens if I accidentally turn into my character?
Oh, happens all the time! If you catch yourself ordering pizza in Shakespearean English or wearing a spacesuit to the supermarket, just roll with it. You're probably nailing your role!
What time do doors open?
Doors open approximately 30 minutes before the scheduled performance start time.
What types of productions does Mercury Theatre Wynnum stage?
We stage a variety of productions, including dramas, comedies, thrillers and radio plays. Our selections are aimed at engaging a broad audience and showcasing local talent.
Do you accept divas?
We all deserve a little star treatment now and then! While we can’t promise a dressing room filled with only blue M&Ms or bathtubs filled with champagne, we do offer applause, admiration, and a supportive cast.
Is it true there’s a trapdoor on stage that leads to a secret underground theatre at St Helena Island?
Inconclusive. Testing still underway. Our stage may or may not hide any secret passages, but it’s definitely a portal to new worlds every time we put on a show.
Is the venue licensed?
A small bar operates at performances, offering a selection of beer, wine and soft drinks. BYO alcohol is not permitted.
Do famous actors ever sneak in to see our shows?
All the time! In fact, they will be at our next performance! Get your ticket and you might even be seated next to them!
Do you have workshops?
Yes, from time to time we hold workshops. Please visit our Facebook page for any notices of workshops.

Do actors really say 'break a leg' because it's bad luck to say 'good luck'?
Yes, and because our insurance doesn't cover 'good luck' injuries.
